A very special Grandma!!
My grandma was Dutch,& she made a big impact on me.My father died when I was 9
yrs.old ,we had 2 grandmothers living
with us .My moms mother lived there too,It was a big help to mom ,because she supported
mom in keeping check on us kids.
There was 4 of us ,& I was the oldest, & my brother Tom was born after my father
died.
Mom washed other peoples clothes& we had a small wagon to
take the peoples clothes home,so that was up to us kids to get them home. Some times Mrs.
Kellen would treat us to strawberry
ice cream, home made at that .Mom got a dollar a basket ,We had a wringer washer & water
was carried from the cistern.
My one grandma was a real hustler, she was taking feathers off the geese & ducks for
pillows & feather beds. She found time to pick blackberries& making blackberry Jam ,as that was her
trade mark ,blackberry jam ,& home made biscuts,& hers was
wonderful. She put Love in everything she did.She was always telling us kids the right &
wrong of things. She never sit down
without working on a quilt for someones bed.We lived in Ky where it was really cold .
My mom was strick on respecting peoples property. Those things
have stayed with me ,Sassing was never allowed.
My granddaughter is in Holland now with her husband, who is
there for some schooling,so she sent me some pics. from there
She says she will send me a picture of a church in Holland.
Us kids were really blessed to have come from this family.

A Glimpse Back To My Childhood!!
I was born & raised along the Ohio river ,in a little community,Where if you
didnt know them as friends ,they were
most of the time relatives. What a place to grow up.I went to a little two room school
house, with 4 grades in each room.My teacher who taught me the first 4 yrs. ,had taught my father before me.
Our home was a big house up on a hill above the Ohio River, there were Show Boats
going up & down the river,& lights at night would glisten ,as they went down the river .Music fill the air,as they
went down .
My childhood was so secure in my eyes, with all the people I loved all around me.So different
from the way life is today for so many children.

My young years without my dad!!
Our father was killed when I was nine years old. Each one has their own depth of loss, &
mine wasnt any different. So much
I remember at nine yrs.old.It has stayed with me all these many
years. My sister has passed away, but I know it impacted her life as it did mine.
Daddy had went to help a neighbor get out of the mud,it was rainy & foggy& didnt
see the train,it left mom with 3 young kids
to raise & a baby on the way.
I loved my dad dearly & never wanted to do anything that would
hurt my dad's memory.
Mom washed out in the smoke house..."a place where they smoke hams"She made a wash house
out of it.I would hear her out there after daddy died, in prayer & singing Precious Memories".
The cemetery was above our house ,on a hill where Joe & I will be buried.
I was parcial to this one grandma, she was always helping me in things that were important
to a growing girl & I listen well .
We as parents & grandparents can have a mighty impact on our kids,if we will take the
time& give good advice & follow yourself what you are trying to teach your children.
